Tire Spring Armor

What: A protective and stylish spring cover.
Why: They provide the ultimate protection for the springs.

Mod Time: 30 Minutes

Materials and Tools:

(1) Large Mountain bike tire (24-26 inch)

(1) Pair of 90 inch (228 cm) shoestrings (snow boot length) or lengths of Nylon cord

- Heavy Duty Scissors
- Hole punch tool (or leather punch tool)

How To:

1. Using the scissors, cut the wire rims off of the tire.
*Note: Cut as close to the wire as possible
2. Cut (2) 27 inch sections from the tire, measuring along the center of the inside surface.
*Note: You may need more length for your stilts. Measure against the spring and add extra to cover the spring bolts.

Make tabs by cutting slits along the edges, evenly spaced. Cut up to the tread pattern, leaving at least 6 cm in the center.
We made our tabs about 1.5 inches wide; The wider your tabs, the less it will conform to the spring.

3. Place a tire section on the spring to see how it will fit.
Pull each set of tabs around the spring and if they overlap more than 1/4 inch, trim the edges.

Trim the top section that covers the spring bolts.

4. Punch holes in the center of each tab using the hole punch tool.
*Note: As you work towards the top of the tire, punch the holes further away from the edge of the tabs. This will help the tire conform to the spring.
5. Place tire over the spring and thread the Shoelace (or Nylon cord) through the 2 bottom tabs. Keep equal lengths on each side.
Tie each tab pair together, working from the bottom of the spring to the top.
*Note: Tie each tab pair snug, and keep tension in the lace as you work. Do not overtighten.

When close to the top, pull the laces down so you have room to tie them.

6. Knot and double-tie the top and tuck into the frame.
Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for the second stilt.
Finished Mod:

For added strength, you can add grommets to the punched holes.
Customize this design with brightly colored shoelaces/nylon, or colored tires.
Choosing the right tread will give your stilts an aggressive look.

History:

Zendalfire (of ProJumpForum.co.uk) created this design with the purpose of making a spring cover that would hold up for the life of the spring and would not take damage the way tape-wrapped springs do. These covers are very durable, adjustable, and reusable. They can also be recycled by making tire socks out of them.
